JAMES IRVINE JAPANESE GARDEN SEEKS VOLUNTEER GARDENERS AND DOCENTS
Calling all garden lovers to join “Friends of the Irvine Japanese Garden”
LOS ANGELES (April 14, 2009) – The Japanese American Cultural and Community Center (JACCC) is pleased to announce the creation of a volunteer based group of gardeners and docents called Friends of the Irvine Japanese Garden.
The JACCC is seeking friends of the community to help maintain and share with others the garden’s beautiful condition in one of two ways: (1) those interested in garden maintenance will participate in cleaning, weeding, and simple trimming and (2) those interested in educating others about the garden will serve as docents, providing tours for visitors. The Program is scheduled to begin in May.
Interested volunteers can submit their names by calling or emailing the JACCC. The club will hold its first orientation meeting and garden tour on Wednesday, May 13 at 10:30am at the James Irvine Japanese Garden. To RSVP for the orientation please contact Ellie Viray at (213) 628-2725, x112 or email at eviray@jaccc.org.
By joining the Friends of the Irvine Japanese Garden, people with a shared interest in garden related activities participate in garden programs, make new friendships, help to reduce daily stress and gain a sense of purpose and personal accomplishment.
JACCC hopes the volunteer group will be a fun activity, a time for residents of Little Tokyo to build deep relationships within the community.
About the James Irvine Japanese Garden
Known in Japanese as Seiryu-en or “Garden of the Clear Stream”, the James
Irvine Japanese Garden is an unexpected haven within the environs of
Downtown Los Angeles.
Built originally in 1980, the garden was recently renovated by original landscape architect Takeo Uesugi in an effort to repurpose the space to accommodate more frequent and versatile public use including cultural demonstrations, weddings and performances.
